Business Development Manager

Survey 160 seeks a Business Development Manager. Survey 160 is a research company that builds and uses proprietary software to conduct surveys for corporations, non-profit organizations, political campaigns, and academic institutions. Through this work, you will help Survey 160 achieve its mission of providing accurate and actionable public opinion research at affordable costs.

The primary responsibility of the Business Development Manager is developing and executing a strategy to acquire clients in new verticals of business for Survey 160. We anticipate an emphasis on market research, advertising agencies conducting in-house measurement programs, and the implementers of research on behalf of state and local government agencies. (Survey 160 primarily serves research firms rather than end clients directly). A strong candidate will be able to understand research and the needs of researchers, not just someone who is familiar with sales generally.

This position is ideal for candidates with four or more years experience in sales, business development, and/or client services at a market research, survey, or advertising analytics firm, offering a foundation of relevant contacts in the sectors listed above. Prior work experience directly in survey research, rather than purely in sales, is a significant plus. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about survey research, methodological innovation, and interested in helping transition a startup into a more mature company.

This role is fully remote and can be based anywhere in the United States within reasonable proximity to a major airport. Travel is expected as part of this role to support sales efforts at conferences and other in-person meetings, approximately 10% of working days depending on location. This is a full-time, permanent role as we seek to grow our team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with leadership to develop and execute a new business sales strategy, especially for clients in the market research, advertising research, and state and local government verticals.

  • Identify and map sales opportunities.

  • Build new relationships within the targeted verticals through conferences, in-person and virtual meetings, cold outreach, and other methods.

  • Attend conferences and manage exhibitor booths. This role is anticipated to entail attending about 10 in person conferences each year

  • Regularly contribute to Survey 160 social media, blog, newsletter, and other public communications.

  • Help develop marketing/sales collateral (slide decks, handouts, two pagers, etc).

  • Write or contribute to the development of proposals for new clients.

  • Give input or potentially manage aspects of paid sponsorships or advertising programs.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Four or more years of experience in business development, sales, and/or client services within survey-adjacent industries like those described above.

  • Self-starter who has a proven ability to build relationships within new business verticals.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, especially in writing appropriate to be delivered to a client, without excessive and obvious reliance on LLMs.

  • Ability to work productively and collaboratively with remote colleagues.

  • Problem-solving, critical thinking & written and verbal communication skills.

  • Highest degree of integrity, specifically with respect to access to sensitive client information/data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience actually conducting survey research, not only experience in marketing and sales.

  • Established network of relationships within the market research, advertising analytics, and/or state and local government research verticals specifically.

  • Demonstrated success with startups transitioning to more established, operating businesses.

COMPENSATION

The base salary range is between $65,000 and $90,000. In addition, this role is eligible for additional bonuses based on both individual and company performance.
